The Right Way to Start with AI in Your Business

A practical framework for picking the first workflows to automate without over-investing or over-promising.

Almost every leadership conversation now includes the same question: where do we actually start with AI? The answer is rarely a strategy document. It is a shortlist of repetitive, high-volume workflows where a mistake is cheap and a win is measurable.

Start from the work, not the technology

List the tasks your team repeats every week, especially the ones they complain about. The best first AI projects are boring, and that is the point. Boring workflows are well understood, so success is easy to measure.

Score candidates on three axes

  • Volume: how many hours or dollars does the task consume each month?
  • Clarity: can a good operator explain the outcome in one sentence?
  • Risk: what happens when it fails? Pick options where the answer is 'nothing serious'.

Automations that score high on all three are the ones to build first, typically in the first two to four weeks of an engagement.

Measure before and after

Define one number to watch, such as calls answered, hours saved or bookings created. Capture the baseline before the build starts, then compare after a full billing cycle.

Build with a human in the loop

The safest first versions let AI draft, summarise or route, and a person approve. That builds comfort with the output, catches edge cases, and makes the eventual handover smooth.

Start narrow, measure honestly, and expand only when the first workflow clearly works. That is how AI becomes routine instead of a pilot that never ships.

Turn this into a plan

Thirty minutes, scope, architecture and a costed next step.
